Vila Nepos is a magnificently restored Roman building located in the very heart of Diocletian's Palace in Split. Originally constructed in the 4th cent. AD as private quarters for the Emperor's elite Roman Praetorian guards, under the careful supervision of conservators, guided by UNESCO, Vila Nepos' rare and unique interior features have been beautifully preserved and the entire building meticulously restored into four exquistely appointed, one and two bedroom full-floor luxury hotel suites.
Each luxury hotel suite is lavishly decorated with extraordinary museum-quality antiques, sculptures and art inspired by the power, wealth and majesty of ancient Roman life as well as by Split's rich medieval history and the grace of its Venetian legacy.
Just to the right of the entrance of Vila Nepos is the original 4th cent. AD Latin carved inscription that refers to the “Emperor's second in command“. Throughout the villa you will be able to see and touch authentic exposed Roman walls and flowing arches.
As you enter, carved into the inside lintel above the entrance door are three rose painted early Christian 7th cent. Maltese-style Peter-Simon crosses—more fascinating examples of the rich history that surrounds you in Vila Nepos. Just steps away from the villa is the most important monument in the Palace—its glorious, colonnaded cental Peristil, where the emperor appeared to be worshiped as the living son of the Roman god Jupiter.
All within a few minutes, walking ancient stone pedestrian-only streets, are the imposing Golden (North) Gate, one of the four main entrances to the Palace; Split's glittering waterfront Riva; the finest restaurants; charming cafes and shops; Roman temples and Venetian palaces--as well as the Old Town's bustling open-air Green and Fish Markets!
